About

Branch Works (NBW) is a membership-supported, nonprofit neighborhood organization that for more than three decades has promoted balanced, job-creating economic development along the North Branch of the Chicago River. North Branch Works has long been a City of Chicago “delegate agency” providing an array of services to local businesses.

NBW participates in Chicago’s Local Industrial Retention Initiative (LIRI) program which supports nonprofit organizations that provide economic development services to companies located in and around designated industrial corridors. NBW's LIRI program works to create and retain jobs, find solutions for individual business needs, and make linkages between businesses, their communities, and City services in the North Branch, Addison, and Kennedy Industrial Corridors.

Through the support of the City’s LIRI program, NBW works to create viable industrial corridors by advocating for sustainable, well-planned development. We provide a variety of services that include:

  • Promoting local businesses
  • Marketing and assisting with City programs and economic incentives
  • Connecting businesses to financial resources
  • Infrastructure assistance
  • Finding expansion and relocation space
  • Providing networking and educational opportunities.

NBW offers assistance with the following City programs:

  • Small Business Improve Fund (SBIF)
  • TIFWorks
  • Enterprise Zone Program
  • Streamlined TIF
  • TIF 50/50
  • Small Accessible Repairs For Seniors (SARFS)

NBW is also designated as a Neighborhood Business Development Center (NBDC) by the City of Chicago’s Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP). We have a strong neighborhood network and coordinate efforts with local aldermen, the City, and other community partners.  We can help businesses with:

  • Information about particular neighborhoods
  • Getting a new small business started
  • Troubleshooting City-related issues for small businesses
  • Connecting businesses to financial resources
  • Business-to-business networking opportunities
  • Employment and workforce development assistance
  • Consumer marketing assistance
  • Connecting businesses to the local community

NBW manages a microloan fund that can help new and existing businesses with working capital, purchasing equipment, purchasing inventory, and leasehold improvements.
