Tonya Trice, Executive Director, South Shore Chamber of Commerce Watch the Spotlight Interview with Tonya Trice Tonya Trice is the Executive Director of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce (SSCC) and South Shore Chamber Community Development Corporation. Soon after the start of her employment with the SSCC, Tonya became an integral part of the organization's succession plan. Once becoming Executive Director, she quickly identified areas of opportunity for the Chamber and the South Shore community. Tonya began to implement strategies of growth which involved strengthening relationships with key stakeholders, governmental agencies, elected officials and other collaborating partners. Her extensive background in real estate has been a value add to the position of Executive Director as it allows her to identify and connect with property owners and educate potential business owners on negotiating commercial transactions. Tonya and her husband are long term residents and business owners in South Shore and have strong community ties. She studied at Loyola University and is currently enrolled at the University of Chicago's Non-Profit Management Program.

In its thirtieth year of business, the family-owned and operated Carniceria y Licoreria Maribel has made itself an integral part of the Heart of Chicago Pilsen neighborhood as a meat and liquor retailer. Under the management of Alejandro Banda for the past two years, the business has continued to grow its cultural and capital value through its new ventures in made-to-order food services, expansion of craft beer and specialty alcohol, addition of gambling machines, and partnership with local muralists bringing a traditionally owned business to the forefront of the new wave of modernization in this community. Alejandro prides himself on being a personable and welcoming host to anyone that enters the business, connecting people of all backgrounds around food and drink which has proven to expand interest outside of the local clientele. Having been featured in publications by the Chicago Tribune, ABC7 Chicago News, Hoy! Newspaper, Urban Matter, Time Out Chicago, and Block Club Chicago since Alejandro’s transition into the role, he has been focused on the balance between new customs and old traditions. Because of this, he has been able to maintain a loyal customer base, sustain reliable relationships with over twenty-five vendors, and support other local businesses while continually cultivating new opportunities for his business and its future.
