In brief, describe the mission of your company.
The mission of the Little Village Chamber of Commerce is to support, promote and enhance the growth and successes of our local businesses and to leverage the community’s assets, contributions and unique Mexican cultural identity to generate new business opportunities. Our tagline is Tu Mexico, Tu Chicago!
Why Chicago? Can you expand on why Chicago is a great city to support small businesses?
Chicago is a city of neighborhoods. Each neighborhood brands itself to differentiate from other communities and offer something slightly different to attract patrons and entrepreneurs.
You provide expert guidance and technical assistance to small and medium sized businesses. Why do you think your support in this area help businesses to thrive?
The Little Village Chamber of Commerce offers very special programming to an underserved population: immigrant entrepreneurs. We offer Juntos Emprendemos, a Spanish language entrepreneurship program. We also help businesses on the SouthWest side of the city get access to capital through loans and grants. Our business owners are very savvy but they do not have equitable access to resources and we help them overcome this barrier.
Why are small businesses important to local communities on multiple levels?
The small businesses of Little Village serve AND employ our residents. A dollar spent in Little Village goes home in the salary of a Little Village resident who then invests it in their home or spends it locally at a different store or restaurant. This constant circulation of currency keeps our local economy strong and builds community wealth. Our small businesses also employ the local workforce that may not have the same access to jobs downtown.
